JAKARTA - Papua Governor Lukas Enembe inaugurated Mamit Airport in Kembu District, Tolikara Regency, Papua.

"The Mamit area was opened in 1963, although the conditions at that time were still underdeveloped, Mamit's parents could accept the Bible, so there were changes," said Lukas Enembe in a press release quoted from Antara, Thursday, February 10.

According to Lukas, when he first left Mamit, the airport runway was still grass but now it is good and paved.

"I hope that this airport will further improve its services, build a tunnel, and have a fence around it because planes will enter from Sentani to Mamit," he said.

Meanwhile, Acting Head of the Papua Province Transportation Service, David Telenggen, said that the existence of an airport in Tolikara Regency has a strategic role in opening up regional isolation in driving the economy and running the wheels of government for services to the community.

"The construction of transportation facilities is considered very important and urgent for the Kembu District in the midst of the condition of the availability of land transportation infrastructure which is still limited," he said.

He explained that because of that, the Papua Provincial Government took planning and development steps so that Mamit Airport could be inaugurated by the Governor of Papua Lukas Enembe along with the implementation of his working visit.

"Now Mamit Airport has been served by pioneers from Wamena to Mamit where in the future, the Papua Provincial Transportation Service will propose a pioneer route from Sentani to Mamit," he said.

He added that the construction of Mamit Airport began in 2016 and was completed by the end of 2021, therefore with the construction of this airport it can facilitate access in and out of people and goods and can improve the economy of the people of Tolikara Regency, especially the people of Kembu District.
