JAKARTA - Inter Milan officially got a new goalkeeper to replace Andre Onana who moved to Manchester United. He is Yann Sommer who was brought in from Bayern Munich.

It did not say how much the transfer value of the Swiss player was. However, a number of sources said Inter spent about six million euros (Rp. 100 billion) to secure the player's signature.

Yann Sommer was tied to a contract until June 2026.

"The Swiss national team goalkeeper has joined permanently from FC Bayern Munich," Inter wrote on its official website.

Sommer said he was happy to join a club as big as Inter Milan which has good traditions at the domestic and international levels.

"Playing for a team like Inter is a new challenge in my career. I can't wait to play at the San Siro, look at the fans and feel the atmosphere of Milan. I'm happy to be here," he said.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper is only half a season in Bayern after being signed from Borussia Monchengladbach in January 2023 to replace injured Manuel Neuer. He helped Bayern win their 33rd league title this year.

"Experience, leadership, and commitment: these are all qualities that Sommer is ready to show in the Nerazzurri color," Inter said in a statement on its official website, as quoted by Antara.

Simone Inzaghi's side did prioritize buying a new goalkeeper after selling Andre Onana to Manchester United in July and releasing Samir Handanovic and Alex Cordaz.

Meanwhile, Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen thanked Yann Sommer for his services when the German club was hit by a goalkeeper crisis due to Neuer's injury.

"We understand and respect Yann Sommer's desire to look for new challenges at Inter Milan as he wants to play number one goalkeeper in the long term," Jan-Christian Dreesen told the club's website.

"(He) helped us in a complicated situation when Manuel Neuer was seriously injured and we want to sincerely thank you for his commitment."

Before moving to the Bundesliga, Sommer won the Swiss Super League with FC Basel four times in a row from 2010-11.

Sommer has made more than 80 appearances for the Swiss national team since making his debut in a friendly against Romania in May 2012.
