Official! Canelo Alvarez Will Fight John Ryder In Guadalajara On May 6, 2023

JAKARTA Mexican boxer Canelo Alvarez is certain to enter the ring in his hometown against British boxer John Border. Canelo will fight for the title of super middleweight.

The duel will take place on May 6 at Akron Stadium, Guadalajara, Mexico, with a capacity of 50 thousand spectators. Canelo was very happy to be able to fight in his home country.

"Back in the ring and back in fighting in Jalisco, where I came from, made me very happy. In John Border, I think I will face a very competitive fighter," he said, quoted by The Sun.

Canelo lost to Dmitry Bivol, 32, when he challenged the WBA lightweight world title in May last year. He then returned in September to beat his rival, Gennady Golovkin.

After the victory, the four-division champion also underwent hand surgery. The operation made him doubt the certainty of when he could return to fight.

"I feel very happy to be back in May because after surgery I don't know when I will be back," Canelo said.

Meanwhile, Ryder, 34, had the opportunity to face Canelo after winning the WBO interim belt against Zach Parker, 28, in November.

Ryder said he certainly would not waste this opportunity to realize his dream of becoming a world champion. However, he knows his opponent will not be easy to bend.

"It is undeniable that Canelo is one of the best boxers and I have great respect for what he has accomplished in this sport," he said.

"I'm not going there for a vacation. For me, it's purely an effort and my full focus is going to his home yard in Guadalajara on May 6 and bringing the belt back to England," he added.

This is Canelo's first fight in Mexico since 2011. Border will also be England's eighth opponent in his outstanding professional career.
