According to the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), the number of referees in volleyball games is five people, consisting of the main referee, second referee, score taker, and two line judges.

So, in order for the match to run fairly, there are a number of requirements to become a volleyball referee that must be met. So, what are these conditions? Check out the following explanation.

Requirements to Become a Volleyball Referee

Summarized from various sources, Saturday, 18 February 2023, there are several requirements to become a volleyball referee, including:

• Healthy physically and spiritually, also have a normal body.
• Have an interest in volleyball.
• One must also have the talent to be a referee.
• Education as low as high school graduates or equivalent.
• Highly dedicated.
• Age between 20 to 40 years.
• Become a member of a volleyball association.

Apart from having to fulfill the requirements above, a volleyball referee must also wear appropriate attributes while leading a match.

This attribute is worn to provide convenience when the referee is on duty while at the same time distinguishing him from the players competing. The attribute requirements that must be used are:

• Wear a collared shirt and pants, not a volleyball jersey like players.
• Wearing white rubber boots.
• Wearing the referee badge according to the classification.
• Bring and wear a whistle

The whistle is used to give a specific signal. Thus, the attention of the players can be focused on the referee as the leader of the match.

Volleyball Referee Duties

As mentioned above, there are five volleyball referees in each game, consisting of the main referee, second referee, score taker, and two line judges. The duties of each match official or referee are determined by the volleyball game rules from the FIVB as follows:

1. Main Referee

The main referee is the match official who stands on the side of the court near the net facing the scorer.

All decisions that cannot be contested in a volleyball match are the decisions of the main referee or first referee. The decision relates to the creation of a number, the team that gets the turn to serve, or determines the occurrence of a violation.

2. Second Referee

The position of the second referee in a volleyball match, standing with his back to the scorer on the side of the field near the net or opposite the main referee.

The second referee is in charge of supervising the occurrence of violations related to the position of the players, the playing area, and the space under the net.

The second referee can provide input to the main referee when he sees ball contact with the surface of the field with a clearer view.

As the main assistant referee, the second referee is responsible for supervising the bench and accepting requests for time-outs or substitutions.

3. Scorers

Score takers or scorers are on duty at a special table in the sideline area, opposite the main referee.

The scorer is in charge of recording the occurrence of points from each team, turn of service, substitutions, and the final result of the game.

Scorers can also report incidents around the field that could disrupt the course of the match from the second umpire to the main umpire.

4. Line Judge

Two line judges serve at each end of the court and stand diagonally 1 to 2 m from the corner of the edge of the playing area.

Each line judge is provided with a flag measuring 40 x 40 cm as a marker for a player or team's score or violation.

The line judge is in charge of determining where the ball falls on the field of play, the player's contact with the ball before heading out of the match area, and the position of a server's feet.
