JAKARTA Chelsea officially brought in Enzo Fernandez from Benfica. The Argentine international is tied to a contract until the summer of 2031.

The Blues received the 2022 World Cup winner's signature for 106.8 million, equivalent to IDR 1.9 trillion. The midfielder's full release clause was paid just before the transfer window closed.

"I am delighted and excited to join the Pride of London, to play in the best league in the world and compete for the biggest trophy," said Fernandez.

"I can't wait to play in front of our fans and help my teammates on and off the pitch," he added.

This price makes Fernandez the most expensive player in the history of English football. The price exceeds Jack Grealish's previous record when Manchester City signed in 2021.

Chelsea have confirmed that the new player will wear the No. 5. The number is currently vacant after being abandoned by Jorginho, who joined Arsenal ahead of the January transfer closing.

However, the 22-year-old will not be allowed to wear the jersey number in the European Champions League. This is because UEFA does not allow two players to wear the same number at the club during the same season.

"I thank Chelsea and their owners for doing everything they can to make me a part of this project," he said.

The River Plate academy graduate joined Benfica last July. He was then in the spotlight after being named the Young Player of the Tournament at the 2022 World Cup Qatar.

Chelsea started chasing the star throughout January. However, a new deal was reached at the end of the transfer window due to complex demands from Benfica regarding the structure of the deal.

Fernandez is the eighth purchase of The Blues in this January transfer window. He follows the names like Mykhailo Mudryk and Benoit Badiamile to West London.
