JAKARTA - Pele's mother, Dona Celeste Arantes, who is more than 100 years old, has not yet known that her son, a football legend, has passed away.
Currently Celeste is being cared for by her son Maria Lucia do Nascimento, the only surviving sister of Pele. They occupy one of the houses in Santos, Brazil.
Maria said she had spoken to her mother about the death of her brother. However, because of the old age of Celeste, it seems difficult to understand the grief that is currently in place throughout Brazil.
"We spoke but he doesn't know the current situation. He is in his own world," Maria said as quoted by The Sun.
"He opened his eyes when I mentioned his (Pele) name and said, 'We will pray for him', but he really doesn't understand what I'm saying," he added.
Celeste celebrated her 100th birthday last month. The moment was shared by Pele through his personal Instagram social media.
"Today we celebrate 100 years of Celeste's life. From a young age, she taught me the value of love and peace. I have more than a hundred reasons to be grateful to be her son," Pele wrote accompanying the post.
"I share these photos with you emotionally while celebrating today. Thank you for every day in front of me mother," continued the three-time World Cup winner.
Pele died at the age of 82 at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, on Thursday last week. He breathed his last due to the failure of various organs in the body.
Pele is considered one of the greatest players ever. In football history, he was the only player to have won the World Cup three times.
