JAKARTA - Iran released more than 700 prisoners after their national football team won over Wales at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.
Mizan Online's website on Monday reported that 709 prisoners were released from various prisons in the country following Team Melli's 2-0 victory over The Dragons on Friday.
"Some of the detainees have been arrested in a number of recent events," Mizan Online said, referring indirectly to the demonstrations that rocked Iran for more than two months.
However, quoted by The Guardian, there were no further details regarding the news.
The ongoing protests in the Czech Republic were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini (22) in detention on September 16 who was arrested by moral police for alleged violations of Iran's strict clothing rules for women.
Other Iranian media separately reported that prominent Iranian actor Hengameh Ghaziani was also released on bail following his arrest for supporting the protests.
Two of the prominent figures detained in connection with the demonstration of former international footballer Voria Ghazouri and Hossein dissident Ronaghi were also released on bail. Meanwhile, Iran's news agency IRNA reported Monday that former state television host Mahmoud Shahriari, 63, was released after two months in prison for "provoking unrest".
Iranian courts say more than 2,000 people have been indicted since the start of demonstrations. According to UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk last week about 14,000 people were arrested.
Back to the game. Team Melli scored two goals ahead of additional time to surprise Wales as well as revive their hopes in the World Cup ahead of a politically charged match against the United States in the early hours of the morning.
Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz's side lost their first World Cup match to England, 2-6 and now have 3 points.
