JAKARTA Barcelona legend Carles Puyol sent an emotional message on social media after finding out his former teammate Gerard Pique announced his retirement from football.

Pique confirmed that he would retire via the latest upload in video format on Twitter. This weekend's Barcelona versus Almeria match will be his last game.

"Thank you to everyone, Geri (Pique's nickname, ed). I am shocked. This is very unfair to you. Only a few players defend Barcelona as you do," Puyol wrote, reported by Football Espana, Friday, November 4.

These two names have both strengthened Barcelona's defense since Pique returned from Manchester United in 2008. Puyol retired in 2014.

Pique and Puyol successfully formed a very solid partnership in the Blaugrana defense. Under their second command, the Catalan team's back sector is very difficult to penetrate by opposing attackers.

During their Barcelona uniform, they were recorded to have won trebles, four La Liga titles and two European Champions Leagues. Meanwhile, at the international level, the pair are part of the Spanish national team, which lifted the 2010 World Cup trophy in South Africa.

"I can only say that being able to play with you is a privilege. I really love you, Kawan," Puyol wrote, adding.

Pique collected a total of 35 trophies while with Barcelona. He played in 666 matches, scored 58 goals, got 163 yellow cards, and 11 red cards. As for the Spanish national team, Pique recorded 102 caps.
