JAKARTA The men's singles coach, Irwansyah, confirmed that Jonatan Christie had an ankle injury. This puts the owner of the 2018 Asian Games gold medal in danger of being absent at the 2022 German Open tomorrow.

Jonathan got the injury during the quarter-final match of the French Open 2022 against Japan's Kodai Naraoka, Friday night. This problem forced Jojo to withdraw in the middle of the third game.

"So Jojo suffered an ankle injury after doing a hard smash and forced himself to take the ball in front of the net. I think the injury was hit at that moment," said Irwansyah in a statement received by VOI.

In the match against Naraoka, Jonathan performed well and successfully secured the first game with a score of 21-14. However, in the second game he repeatedly received attacks from the opponent so he gave up with the same score.

Jonathan then had to receive treatment when the third game was in a 9-9 draw. He again had problems with his right leg when he was 13-17, but could not be medically helped anymore because treatment was only allowed once.

Irwansyah said that Jojo was actually able to play using a strategy in the third game. However, at the beginning of the deciding game there was a moment where he forced his ball in front of the net which made his ankle problematic.

"The exit of his right leg was wrong to build up, so it felt pain. Jojo felt pain when he stepped on his leg. So, in the end, it was decided that it would be better not to continue the match," said Irwansyah.

"The decision to step down was taken after Jojo spoke to me. I was worried about his injury," he added.

Jonathan is one of two Indonesian representatives who returned in the quarter-finals. One other representative who failed to break into the semifinals was the men's doubles Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri.

The only representative who escaped was the mixed doubles number Rehan Naufal Kusharjanto/Lisa Ayu Kusumawati. The pair repatriated sixth seeded host Thom Gicquel/Delphine Delrue.

In the semifinals, Rehan/Lisa will face the Dutch pair, Robin Tableing/Selena Piek, who qualified after defeating South Korean fifth seed Seo Seung Jae/Chae Yu Jung.
