Gareth Southgate Tegas Still Wants To Train England After The 2022 World Cup, But...

JAKARTA - The appearance of the England national team at the UEFA Nations League has put pressure on Gareth Southgate. The manager is advised to leave his post after the 2022 World Cup ends.

However, Southgate doesn't want to ignore it. He plans to be in the UK manager's chair in the next few years.

"Part of my journey as a player and manager of the UK may be the biggest spotlight and the greatest honor for me," he was quoted as saying by TalkSport.

"I hope this is not the end of it... I hope there will be a few more years ahead and I will continue that (training the England national team)," he continued.

Qatar's 2022 World Cup will be Southgate's third major tournament as England's manager. After bringing the Three Lions to the top four in the 2018 World Cup, he then succeeded in making England a finalist at EURO 2020.

But when the UK failed to win their last six games in the UEFA Nations League League League and had to be relegated to League B, there was a call for the former England defender to step down.

However, he still respects his contract in the England national team which is still valid until 2026. However, he realized his contract would mean nothing if the Three Lions failed in Qatar.

"However, of course there are many things in the next few months that we want to achieve as a start. Beyond that, I assume life will continue and there will be many challenges ahead," he explained.

"I know in the end I will be tried based on what happened at the World Cup. The contract is irrelevant in football because the manager can have a three, four, five year contract and you accept that if the results are not good enough, this is the time to separate."

"Why am I being different? I'm not arrogant enough to think that my contract will protect me in any way," he stressed.
