JAKARTA Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) Sports Director Luis Campos persuaded Lionel Messi not to return to his former club Barcelona when his contract is complete.

The Argentine has only one year left on his contract with the French giant. This sparked rumors about Messi's possibility of returning to Barcelona.

However, La Pulga has the option to extend his contract at PSG in one more year. For this reason, Campos also hopes that Messi does not miss the opportunity.

"I asked Messi if he wanted to stay and I told him I wish he would stay here during my tenure here [3 years]. I am very satisfied with him," Campos told RMC.

The 35-year-old has yet to make a decision regarding his future. He is expected to only do so after the 2022 Qatar World Cup at the end of this year.

Barcelona president Joan Laporta earlier earlier this year had teased Messi to return to Camp Nou. In his statement, Laporta claims that he wants La Pulga to end his career in Barca uniforms.

"I feel indebted to Leo Messi. I want him to end his career in Barca uniforms, and get applause from the whole stadium," Laporta said last July, reported by The Sun.

"I feel partly responsible for how things end up, and I feel that this is a temporary end and we will make this dream a reality. At least that's his dream," Laporta added.

Messi has had an outstanding second season with Les Parisiens after a tough first season. So far he is in good form with a five-goal record and made eight assists in 10 games.
