JAKARTA The retired mixed martial arts Khabib Nurmagomedov praised UFC middleweight champion Leon Edwards. He considered Edwards a very good figure.

Khabib gave the compliment when he visited ICC Birmingham to attend an event titled 'Khabib: The Legacy Continuies'.

At the event, Khabib spoke about many things, including his unbeaten life and career. He was then asked if he had a message in the form of congratulations to Edwards.

"Of course, of course [I congratulate]. He even beat my good friend Kamaru Usman," Khabih said as quoted by the Birmingham Mail, quoted on Sunday.

"He's a champion right now. A lot of people say 'be lucky, bla-bla', but I think a lot of people forget that since 2016 he's had 10 wins in a row at the UFC," he added.

Leon Edwards became the new welterweight champion after defeating knockout (KO) over Kamaru Usman at UFC 278 at Vivint Arena, United States on Sunday, August 21.

The fighter nicknamed Rocky confirmed victory after making his opponent fall with a head-kick, aka a kick to the head during the remaining 56 seconds.

"Let's give him respect and call him world champion. I know Leon, I think we trained several sessions in 2016. He was very good, a very good man. I am very happy," said Khabib.

Edwards was the first British to become UFC champion since Darren Till's failure in the welterweight four years ago. This success made him the second British fighter to win the UFC after Michael Bisping.
