JAKARTA - Alex Pereira, one of the greatest Brazilian fighters to ever set foot in the UFC, opened up about the toughest fight of his life.
Pereira had to overcome his alcohol addiction, and he admits that the fight was by no means easy.
"It's been four years I've been struggling (to break free from alcohol). If I don't stop, I'm nothing. I never drink anything again," he told the Werdum Nao Para podcast, quoted Saturday.
"I've never used drugs and my problem is drinking. I drink every day. I drink almost a liter a day."
The Brazilian fighter showed that sport helped him overcome that hell.
"I even have a drinking schedule, I'm afraid," Pereira said.
"How many people suffer from alcohol and drug problems? Today, people have the opportunity to know they can save themselves, through help and in sports.
Kickboxing was a great escape for Pereira. Through sports, he found a way out of alcohol.
"I drank like crazy," Pereira said.
"That's when I thought sport would save me. I can't play football. But I knew I had fighting talent and I chose martial arts."
