JAKARTA - The 26-year marriage of heavyweight boxing legend Vitali Klitschko with Natalia has ended.

Vitali and Natalia married in 1996 after allegedly first meeting in the Ukrainian capital. They had three children; Yegor-Daniel (22), Elizabeth-Victoria (19), and Max (16).

Since the Russian invasion in early February, Klitschko has worked tirelessly as mayor of Kyiv, the nation's capital. Meanwhile, Natalia, a 48-year-old former model and musician, has lived in Germany for many years.

Now, Klitschko admits they have officially filed for divorce. However, the 51-year-old said they still have a good relationship.

"We filed for divorce together because we have lived apart for many years and now want to make it official," Klitschko stated for German news site Bild.

"We have a very good relationship and mutual respect, but we have lived apart in different cities for a long time."

According to reports, Vitali still writes to Natalia every morning to let her know she is safe in Kyiv.

Natalia - a yoga instructor of German and Ukrainian descent - has been helping to care for refugees fleeing war-torn Ukraine for the past six months.

Vitali is a successful boxer with a 45-2 record who has also won the WBO and WBC heavyweight titles. Before retiring from sports, he entered politics. He has served as mayor of Kiev since 2014.

Along with his brother and fellow boxing legend Wladimir, Vitali vows to sacrifice his life to defend his nation from Russia.

When Russian troops attacked Kyiv earlier this year, both took up arms to defend the Ukrainian capital from Vladimir Putin's army.
