The Moroccan national team has participated in the FIFA World Cup six times. The Atlas Lions' best result came in 1986, when they became the first and only African and Arab national team to finish top of the group at the FIFA World Cup. In Group F of the 1986 FIFA World Cup, Morocco finished above England, Portugal and Poland after holding Poland and England to a goalless draw, and beating Portugal 3-1.

As such, they became the first African national football team, and only the second national football team from outside Europe and America (after North Korea at the 1966 World Cup), to reach the second round of the World Cup. In the next round of 16, they narrowly lost to runners-up West Germany 0-1.
