JAKARTA - The British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit on Sunday, July 3 was temporarily suspended following an accident involving Alfa Romeo's Zhou Guanyu and a number of other drivers on the opening lap after the start.

Zhou was the victim of a head-on collision involving George Russell and Pierre Gasly which sent his Alfa Romeo overturned on the track before crashing into the guardrail at Abbey.

The incident occurred after Gasly's car collided with Zhou and Russell, which resulted in the Mercedes number 63 losing control and crashing into Zhou's car before turning 1 at high speed.

Russell was seen running on the scene to help evacuate Zhou.

"Following the crash at the start of the British Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu has regained consciousness and is now at the circuit medical center for tests," Alfa Romeo said in a statement on Twitter.

Russell's Mercedes was returned to the pits and the team crew worked to get the car ready for the restart of the race.

Alexander Albon, Sebastian Vettel, and Esteban Ocon were involved in separate crashes after the start. The Williams driver found his car crashing into the right-hand side railing while trying to brake to avoid an accident.

A red flag was flown delaying the race, while Max Verstappen took the lead after overtaking polesitter Carlos Sainz, according to the official Formula 1 website.
