JAKARTA - After Japan and South Korea in 2002, the World Cup will be held again in Asia this year. FIFA has selected Qatar as the venue and host for the 2022 World Cup.

According to FIFA's application documents, at least 12 stadiums are needed to host the World Cup in Qatar. However, this failed to be realized because most of the arenas in this small country had not yet been built.

The Qatar World Cup will eventually be played in eight different stadiums spread across five other host cities. This had caused strong criticism from many parties. But, show must go on.

Although Qatar only provides 8 stadiums for the 2022 World Cup, all of them are equipped with air conditioning for optimal football enjoyment. Qatar uses environmentally friendly technology to cool stadiums which technology like this can also be applied to other countries in the future.

After the World Cup, these stadiums will be reduced in size. They will be used as permanent stadiums for regional clubs, while parts of those stadiums can be used as separate modules by other countries in Asia.

1. Khalifa International Stadium

The only Qatar football World Cup stadium that was not built from scratch. Khalifa International Stadium is the most iconic arena in the country of Qatar and has actually been around since 1976 but is arguably ancient by local standards.

After major renovations, the pitch reopened in 2017 and, with a capacity of 40,000, will host matches up to the quarter-final stage.

With state-of-the-art cooling technology that keeps both players and fans at the ideal temperature, the modernity of the stadium is also represented by the iconic double arch external structure.

Khalifa International Stadium is in the heart of Doha's Aspire Zone, a technology development and innovation area that will act as a major hub for fans throughout the 2022 World Cup.

2. Al Janoub Stadium

Al-Janoub Stadium is a truly striking arena that has a capacity of around 40 thousand. The stadium was designed by the late - renowned architect Dame Zaha Hadid - in his signature arch style.

Qatar's stylish stadium is inspired by the hulls of pearl fishing vessels that have long operated in the Arabian Peninsula.

Al-Janoub Stadium is located in the city of Al-Wakrah. Just 20 km from Doha, fans will be able to reach the stadium city of Al-Wakrah using a purpose-built metro line.

3. Education City Stadium

Education City Stadium is a 40,000-seater arena that will host matches until the quarter-finals of the Qatar 2022 World Cup. The stadium is named after its location on the campus of Qatar's leading university.

The ground level of the stadium is designed in the shape of a jagged diamond that will sparkle during the day and, literally, glow at night. Stadium capacity will be reduced by half after the tournament in which more than 20,000 seats will be donated to build stadiums in developing countries.

Education City Stadium is located just 7 km from downtown Doha and fans will easily reach it by road or metro. The entire area is filled with green spaces, golf courses, and even a state-of-the-art shopping mall.

4. Al Bayt Stadium

Al-Bayt Stadium is located in the city of Al-Khor and will host the semifinals of the 2022 World Cup. The arena features a striking design that mirrors the tents used by the Bedouin people, a nomadic group that has lived throughout the Arab world for centuries.

The 60,000-seater stadium is housed within a larger complex featuring various facilities such as a shopping mall, hospital and more. Located 60 km from Doha, the stadium is one of the most difficult for fans to reach, with taxis and buses being the best options for traveling here.

5. Al Rayan Stadium

Located on the site of the old Ahmed Bin Ali Stadium, Al-Rayyan Stadium has a capacity of over 40,000, which will host matches up to the quarter-final stage of the Qatar World Cup.

One of the most traditional and historic cities in Qatar, Al-Rayyan is situated on the edge of the desert and will allow visitors to the country to glimpse Qatar's deep cultural roots. Just a few kilometers from Doha, fans will be able to reach the stadium via a purpose-built metro line.

6. Al Thumama Stadium

Located only 12 km from the center of Doha, Al-Thumama Stadium has a capacity of 40,000 seats. The arena's eye-catching design is inspired by the gahfiya, the traditional woven hat worn by Arab men.

Like many stadiums at the 2022 World Cup, Al-Thumama will reduce its capacity to 20,000 after the tournament and donate its seats to help promote football and stadiums in developing countries. The stadium will be reachable by a purpose-built metro line from Doha.

7. Ras Abu Aboud Stadium

Ras Abu Aboud Stadium with a capacity of 40,000, is located on the shores of the Bay and overlooks Doha. Made from shipping containers and other recycled materials, the stadium will be dismantled after the 2022 World Cup, with parts used in other building projects across the country.

The arena's stunning riverside location will be a breath of fresh air for fans, who can reach Ras Abu Aboud via a short metro ride from downtown Doha just across the bay.

8. Lusail Stadium

The iconic Lusail Stadium will host the opening matches and final of the 2022 World Cup. The arena has a capacity of over 86,000 and was designed by British architects Foster + Partners.

With a structure designed to reflect the ancient Arabian bowl weaving craft, the stadium is set to provide a stunning venue for the opening and closing of the tournament.

The arena is located in Lusail City, a planned city located north of Doha. Amazingly, this is an entire city built especially for the event. By the time the World Cup rolls around, Lusail will be home to a range of amenities including a marina, island resorts, luxury shopping and leisure facilities, and more.

Just 15 km north of central Doha, Lusail Icon Stadium will be served by a direct metro network from the capital, making the stadium easy to reach.
