JAKARTA – Men's singles, Anthony Sinisuka Ginting, had to come back from behind to reach the last 16 of the Indonesia Masters 2022.

The world number six lost the first game against Kunlavut Vitidsarn of Thailand before coming back in the next two games to win with a score of 16-21, 21-16 and 21-18, at Istora, Senayan, Jakarta, on Wednesday, June 8.

Ginting said he was happy to be able to win at home in front of thousands of pairs of eyes after two years of vacuum due to the pandemic.

"Playing at Istora has plus and minus points. There are many people who support us. But most importantly from ourselves. We must be able to manage ourselves because it is noisy. However, it's nice to be able to play again at Istora because the enemies must be under pressure," Ginting said after the match.

Anthony became the second representative of Indonesia to reach the round of 16. Before the tickets had been obtained by Chico Aura Dwi Wardoyo who won over Sameer Verma (India).

The Indonesian men's singles that failed to reach the second round were Tommy Sugiarto and Jonatan Christie. Tommy returned home after surrendering to Hong Kong representative Lee Cheuk Yiu, while Jonathan lost to China's Zhao Jun Peng.

In the second round later, the badminton player from West Java met another Thai representative, namely Sitthikom Thammasin, who eliminated his compatriot Khosit Phetpradab.

"There is a discussion with the coach about tomorrow what the opponent will be like. So, how to prepare the strengths and weaknesses of the enemy," said Ginting after the match.

The victory over Kunlavut made Anthony managed to equal the win-loss record to 2-2 from a total of four meetings. One of the previous two defeats Anthony has suffered was in the recent Thomas Cup.
