JAKARTA - Canelo Alvarez is never shy about showing his love for golf. The Mexican has said many times he dedicates several hours a day to golf and it has benefited his mental focus.

However, following his loss to Dmitry Bivol on 7 May, Canelo faced questions about his time on the golf course compared to the boxing ring.

The first person to question Canelo's love of golf was Oscar De La Hoya. Then, now Jaime Munguia echoed his sentiments too.

The former super welterweight champion said that his compatriot had too many distractions before his fight against Bivol and that this ended up being bad for him.

"They're always a nuisance. Maybe you don't see them, but they're a distraction," Munguia told Minutod.

"I think Canelo, who has a lot of fame, a lot of people, maybe he has a thousand things, a thousand things to do, so it takes your mind off a lot of things."

The 25-year-old also said he believes the distraction is preventing Canelo from focusing 100 per cent against Bivol.

"I think I saw Canelo a little bit out of focus, like he wasn't 100 per cent in the fight," said Munguia.

Munguia added that Canelo should still have enough ability to beat Gennady Golovkin on September 17, despite his distraction.

"He only had one hit, a curved punch," added Munguia. "So, I think he has to work more in the middle, hitting the body. I think that's enough to knock GGG down."

De La Hoya's strong criticism of Canelo

After Canelo's failure to win the 175-pound WBA title, De La Hoya slammed his former opponent.

"From what I've seen, and I've seen everything, Canelo is playing a lot more golf," said De La Hoya.

“He used to play golf a lot between fights and between training camps. It requires a lot from you.
