Dmitry Bivol Says To Eddie Hearn After Beating Canelo Alvarez: Sorry I Ruined Your Plans With Golovkin

JAKARTA - Dmitry Bivol apologized to boxing promoter Eddie Hearn because the third fight between Saul Alvarez versus Gennady Golovkin had to be postponed after he beat Canelo on Sunday.

Bivol retained the WBA Light Heavyweight title and remained unbeaten with a unanimous win over Canelo. Following the announcement of the decision, the Russian boxer expressed his joy.

"I'm proud that I proved myself today, I'm the best. Thank you Eddie Hearn, and sorry, I ruined your plan to reunite Canelo with Gennadiy Golovkin," Bivol said as quoted by Marca, Monday, May 9.

The much-anticipated trilogy fight between Canelo and Golovkin is slated for next September. The two boxers fought at the middleweight division in 2017 and 2018. Canelo won the rematch by majority decision after their first fight ended in a controversial draw.

However, with Canelo's defeat, the long-awaited third bout with his opponent from Kazakhstan will have to wait a little longer. The reason is, Canelo's camp activated the rematch clause with Bivol in an interview after the fight.

Bivol came on as heavy underdogs against Alvarez, but the 31-year-old proved why he is king at 175 pounds.

Throughout the 12-round match, the Russian kept his cool and stuck to his game plan. In the early rounds, he attacked with heavy punches that left Canelo bruised and looking frustrated.

Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canelo attempted to reclaim control, but Bivol remained unfazed. He mixes up his attacks and takes advantage of his size and range.

Despite appearing dominant, Bivol won the battle by a narrow score from the three judges; 115-113. It was Canelo's first loss since losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013. That loss also ended his 16-game winning streak.
