JAKARTA - Brazilian club Internacional condemned the "cowardly threats" leveled at midfielder Edenilson on Wednesday after he received a video from a gunman and warned him to improve his form.
The 32-year-old midfielder, who has made two caps for Brazil, was sent a video of a man with a gun saying: "Edenilson, you better be careful because we're going to catch you. Play football (your best). We'll get you for sure."
Edenilson later posted the video on Instagram with the man's face obscured and captioned, "This, until when?"
"Internacional strongly condemns the cowardly threats made against midfielder Edenilson on social media and reaffirms its commitment to a more peaceful society and sport," the club said in a statement.
The incident comes after Corinthians asked police to protect their players earlier this month after death threats were sent to goalkeeper Cassio.
In February, the Porto Alegre derby between Internacional and Gremio was called off just minutes before the start of the match when the Gremio team bus was attacked on its way to the stadium.
The attack came two days after explosives were hurled through the window of the Bahia team bus, injuring a player on board.
