JAKARTA - General Chairperson of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Floor Tennis Association (PP Pelti) Rildo Anwar targets Indonesia to be able to maintain the overall champion status in tennis at the SEA Games Hanoi 12-23 May.

"Tennis in the previous edition was the overall champion at the SEA Games [Philippines 2019] and this is also one thing for us to be a target if we can stay in the overall championship. Hopefully that target is met," said Rildo Anwar in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 12 .

In 2019, Indonesia came out as the overall champion after successfully bringing home three gold medals from the five numbers contested.

The three golds were respectively won by Aldila Sutjiadi in the women's singles, Christopher Rungkat/Aldila Sutjiadi in the mixed doubles, and Beatrice Gumulya/Jessy Priskila in the women's doubles.

For this year, Indonesia's potential to increase the number of gold medals in Hanoi is wide open. The reason is, the team numbers that are absent in the Philippines will be competed in Vietnam in May.

"So we have to add two more from the total to seven [numbers]. If for example we can get to five, yes, thank God, but we still hold on to the third point. That's the target. In general, we have to adjust how much gold we have," said Anwar.

The three most seeded numbers won gold medals at the Hanoi SEA Games later, namely from the mixed doubles, men's doubles and women's doubles. Of the three numbers, only the men's doubles failed to bring home gold in the Philippines in 2019.

The men's doubles is now the hope of getting gold in the biennial event after a charming performance against Venezuela in the Davis Cup Group II play-offs in early March. At that time the men's doubles number lowered Christopher/M. Rifqi Fitriadi.

Anwar said that this achievement made him hope that the men's doubles event would be successful in Hanoi later.

"Yesterday [at the Philippine SEA Games] there was no [gold medal] in the men's doubles. So if we can do the men's doubles, we can get it in the men's team and if we can in the women's team as well," he said.
