Uncle Mayweather Praises Canelo Alvarez: I See Floyd In Him

JAKARTA - World super middleweight champion, Saul Canelo Alvarez, is ready to face Dmitry Bivol on 7 May at the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas.

The Mexican boxer received criticism for choosing opponents from the lower levels. However, Jeff Mayweather, a former boxer and Floyd's uncle, praised Canelo and compared him to his nephew.

"I see Floyd in Canelo," he said in an interview with Thaboxingvoice quoted from Marca, Tuesday, March 15.

"Basically in the way he moves. Canelo, at first, wasn't a solid defensive boxer, but now he's moving his head. I see a lot of Floyd in him. It's not necessarily anything but I feel like he took a page out of his (Floyd) book."

Canelo suffered his only loss against Money - Floyd's nickname - on September 14, 2013. The legendary American boxer won 117-111, 116-112 and 114-114 via scoring cards.

Since then, Canelo has fought 16 times and won the super-welterweight, middleweight, super-middleweight and semi-complete titles. On May 7, he will face Dmitry Bivol for the 175-pound WBO belt.

"The reason Floyd beat him is because Floyd is better than him. Floyd's intelligence is much higher than him, and Floyd is better than Canelo," said Jeff.

"Now, Canelo can play his game and Canelo is a better fighter than when he fought Floyd."

Jeff Mayweather is a professional boxer who has a 32-10-5 record. After retiring, he became a coach and was with Floyd several times.
