JAKARTA - The English League has officially stopped broadcasting rights in Russia. The move was taken as part of sanctions against Russia invading Ukraine.
The Premier League's move to suspend its broadcasting rights deal with Russia came after 20 clubs agreed to terminate their deal with Rambler, Russia's broadcasting rights holder.
Since Russia invaded Ukraine, the Premier League has continued to review cooperation with the Rambler. Now it was decided the deal worth 6 million pounds per year was suspended.
In addition to the sanctions decision, the Premier League will also donate £1 million to the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) to help those affected by the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
"The League strongly condemns Russia's invasion of Ukraine. We demand peace and our concern is with all those affected," the Premier League said in a statement.
Along with the decision of the Premier League, the English Football Association (FA) also suspended the deal with Russia. That means there will be no broadcasts of the FA Cup or Premier League for football fans in the country led by Vladimir Putin.
"This is the right thing to do and we fully support the Premier League's decision to stop broadcasting matches in Russia following Putin's barbaric and callous invasion of Ukraine," said British Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston.
"Russia cannot be allowed to legitimize its illegal wars through sport and culture, and we must work together to ensure Putin remains an international pariah," Huddleston said.
