Indonesia Enters Group A FIBA Asia Cup 2022 Draw, Perbasi: Can Qualify For Next Round

JAKARTA – The draw for the FIBA Asia Cup 2022 has been completed. The Indonesian national basketball team is confirmed to be in Group A along with Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Australia.

The raffle event took place in Jakarta, on Friday, February 18th. Indonesia as the host was given the privilege to choose the group as desired.

The General Chairperson (Ketum) of the Central Executive of the Indonesian Basketball Association (PP Perbasi) Danny Kosasih was given the opportunity to choose a group for Indonesia. He was called to the stage and decided to choose Group A which he thought was easier than other groups.

Danny said that he deliberately chose Group A because there were Saudi Arabia and Jordan. The two countries will face the Indonesian national team in the second window of the 2023 FIBA World Cup Qualifications on the nearest 24 and 27 February.

"So you can read their game. With the results of this draw, Indonesia has the opportunity to qualify for the next round," Danny said in a press conference after the draw was held.

If you look at the strength of each group, Group A is considered to be younger for Indonesia. The reason is that the other groups are filled with teams that are the strength of basketball in Asia.

In Group B, for example, South Korea, Bahrain, Chinese Taipei and China are filled. Meanwhile, Group C includes Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, and Syria, and finally Group D includes New Zealand, the Philippines, India and Lebanon.

The FIBA Asia Cup 2022 will be held in Indonesia from 12 to 24 July 2022. The championship which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic will take place at Istora, GBK, Senayan, Jakarta.
