JAKARTA - In commemoration of Mother's Day 2024, the Chairperson of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, highlighted how important a woman's role is. One of the things that can be done to increase the role of women and mothers is to maximize the implementation of Law No. 4 of 2024 concerning Maternal and Child Welfare in the First Phase of the Thousand Days of Life (UU KIA).
"Happy Mother's Day to all Indonesian women. Mother's Day and the KIA Law are complementary in an effort to increase the position and role of women in this country," said Puan Maharani, Sunday (22/12/2024).
According to Puan, the moment of Mother's Day which is commemorated every December 22 has a deep meaning to remind all elements of the nation about the contribution of women in the nation's history.
"This warning is not only a tribute to mothers, but also as an acknowledgment of the important role of women in the development of the nation," said the first woman to serve as Chair of the DPR RI.
"Mother's Day is a symbol of women's struggle in achieving gender equality and social recognition. Women have important roles in various lines of life including politics, economy, and social," continued Puan.
The former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture also revealed the reasons why the DPR initiated and fought heavily for the KIA Law. Puan said this was because the KIA Law provided guarantees and legal basis to protect the rights of women and children who are part of the mother.
"The KIA Law is a strategic step in supporting the welfare of families and women in Indonesia. The goal is to ensure that their rights are fulfilled in the context of their families and communities," said the mother of two.

In 2024, Mother's Day has the big theme 'Women Greet, Women Empowered Towards Indonesia Gold 2045'. This theme was taken to emphasize the commitment that women have a strategic role in creating an inclusive, prosperous and just society in line with the nation's big vision.
Many women and current mothers still face great challenges in education, health, and the economy. This is our common task, especially the Government and other policy makers to ensure that women's empowerment in Indonesia is maximized," said Puan.
The DPR itself through its functions and authorities is said to continue to strive to build women's empowerment, including strengthening the role of mothers. Including, said Puan, through the KIA Law which ensures collective responsibility for the welfare of mothers and the growth and development of children.
"With the existence of KIA, it is hoped that there will be reinforcement in the role of women as mothers and family members who contribute to development. These two aspects are important pillars in realizing a just and equal society," he explained.
In addition, Puan explained that the KIA Law can be a protector in overcoming various issues faced by women. Such as matters of domestic violence, discrimination, and access to education and health.
The KIA Law also functions as a legal umbrella to protect the rights of women and children, as well as encourage their active participation in development where this law covers various aspects related to the health, education, and social welfare of mothers and children.
UU KIA can also encourage the role of parenting together between mothers and fathers, and there is also the responsibility of the Government and the environment. Hopefully, this can reduce the burden of parenting that has been mostly borne by women," explained Puan.
