JAKARTA - Greek police detained 16 people and confiscated drugs and weapons in an operation aimed at dismantling the country's active Turkish criminal group.

In recent years, Greece has seen a significant increase in the number of Turkish nationals involved in the shooting or arrested for possession of weapons.

Reported by Reuters on Wednesday, December 11, police sources attributed this increase to the growing presence of members of the Turkish criminal gang in Greece fleeing Turkey and clashing with each other in foreign territory.

This week, two Turkish nationals were killed and one seriously injured in a gun attack in southern Athens, which is being investigated.

Police previously said they had disbanded a gang of many-member Turkish drug smugglers. In June, a 22-year-old Turkish citizen was jailed pending trial after killing another Turkish citizen and injuring a third person in a gun attack in the port city of Piraeus.
