JAKARTA - DPR Speaker Puan Maharani asked the Government to improve security at tourist sites ahead of the year-end holidays, in line with the recent extreme weather in Indonesia.
According to him, the government and other relevant agencies must anticipate at tourist attractions during the 2024 Christmas and 2025 New Year holidays.
"The warning from the BMKG must be a call for the government, especially local governments, to increase anticipatory steps. Do not let us repeat the same mistakes regarding disasters at tourist sites," said Puan Maharani, Wednesday, December 11.
Recently, parts of Indonesia was hit by disasters, such as flash floods in Sukabumi. Most recently, the incident of a tree fell on Monkey Forest, Ubud, Bali, on Tuesday, December 10, yesterday left two foreign tourists dead. The fallen tree at the tourist spot also injured one other tourist.
In a video that has gone viral on social media, it appears that a number of panicked tourists are running around avoiding fallen trees. The tragedy began with the appearance of a wind resembling a small-scale tornado.
For the incident, Puan expressed her concern. He hopes that every Regional Government (Pemda) can mitigate to anticipate fallen trees in extreme weather like today.
"We ask the government to take strategic steps in mitigating disasters. Soon to enter the year-end holidays, usually people's mobility will be high," said Puan.
Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) revealed that extreme weather in a number of areas in Indonesia was triggered by several atmospheric phenomena that occurred at the same time. Floods, landslides and ground movement occurred in several areas, such as in Sukabumi Regency last week.
Puan emphasized that warnings from the BMKG must be responded to with the readiness of the Government and relevant stakeholders. He asked the local government to ensure that the crowded points that people often refer to are safe and conducive.
"Especially for tourist sites that have risky rides. The government needs to cooperate with management for the integrated maintenance process," said Puan.
According to Puan, there needs to be cross-agency coordination such as BMKG, BPBD, Basarnas, TNI/Polri and local governments to ensure public safety during holidays. This is done to ensure mitigation runs effectively.

We have to learn from the past. The government needs to prepare strategic steps to reduce the impact of flooding, including infrastructure readiness and emergency handling. Regarding tourist attraction permits, it also needs to be considered, do it in detail," explained Puan.
On the other hand, Puan asked BMKG to make preventive efforts in handling extreme weather, both warnings and weather modifications that have been carried out to reduce the potential for hydrometeorological disasters. Such as floods that often hit Indonesian territory due to high rainfall intensity.
"BMKG needs to carry out a more optimal warning and the modification of the weather that has been carried out can be maximized," he concluded.
