JAKARTA - Chairman of the PDI-P (PDIP) DPP and Chairman of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Puan Maharani, responded to the statement by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) who approved his son, Gibran Rakabuming, to run in the 2024 presidential election. Gibran, who is a PDIP cadre, is known to be proposed as a companion to Prabowo Subianto's presidential candidate as vice presidential candidate.

"Yes, of course, if a father will support his child, the best is for his child," said Puan.

Puan Maharani's statement was delivered after attending the commemoration of National Santri Day 2023, at the Heroes Monument, Surabaya, East Java on Sunday 22 October. President Jokowi was also present at this event.

Even so, Puan was reluctant to respond further to Gibran's candidacy as Prabowo's partner. Moreover, the question of the possibility of the PDIP vote being eroded in the Central Java region with Gibran's participation in the presidential election contestation.

"Don't assume that you haven't advanced yet, it's just been nominated or recommended. So, we'll just have to wait and see what Gibran's response will be," said Puan.

The Advisory Board for the National Winning Team Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud Md (TPN GM) also responded positively to President Jokowi's statement in support of all presidential candidates in the 2024 presidential election. According to Puan, this is natural considering Jokowi's position as a leader of the country, there should be no partiality, even though Jokowi is a PDIP cadre.

"Yes, indeed, a statesman must be like that, not expressing support for one of the candidates in the upcoming presidential election contestation," said the former Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture.

As a country leader, Jokowi is considered to have a responsibility to maintain order, security and conducive election continuity.

"What he said is that he is truly a statesman, the President must not take sides in the upcoming presidential election contestation," said Puan Maharani.

"Because they want the 2024 democratic party to run well, smoothly, coolly, happy, the people are not nervous, not depressed. I appreciate what Pak Jokowi said," he continued.

Puan also considers Jokowi to have acted fairly for all presidential candidates. This is considered to deny the issue of Jokowi's support for Prabowo for the 2024 presidential election.

"There are two who have registered, in my opinion, Mr. Jokowi can definitely position himself as President of the Republic of Indonesia, President of all Indonesian people," said Bung Karno's grandson.

Regarding Gibran's plan to visit high-ranking Indonesian Coalition party officials who support Prabowo, Puan assessed that it does not mean that Gibran will turn away from his own party who has decided to carry Ganjar-Mahfud in the 2024 presidential election.

"I am also a PDIP (to the Advanced Indonesia Coalition), to visit all parties. So friendship is a natural thing and done," explained Puan.

The chairman of the PDIP Winning Team in the 2024 General Election also denied the news that there was tension between PDIP General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri and Jokowi. Puan said Megawati still considers Jokowi as the best cadre who can lead the nation and state.

"I remind you that I love you all time, Mrs. Mega loves you very much in the sense of affection as the best cadre, so Ibu Mega hopes that whatever Mr. Jokowi does as a PDIP cadre is the best for the nation and state," he said.

Puan Maharani herself has met with Gibran in the midst of the news that the Mayor of Solo will be carried by the opposing coalition in the 2024 presidential election. To Puan, Gibran stated that there is a possibility to participate in the 2024 presidential election even though PDIP has decided to carry Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.

"Last night I met Mas Gibran, where Mas Gibran said there was a possibility to participate in the presidential election contestation. But for how we wait," said Puan after leading the consolidation of Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD volunteers throughout East Java which was held at Grand City Surabaya, Saturday (21/10).

Regarding Golkar's attitude in carrying Gibran as a vice presidential candidate, Puan did not want to comment much.

"The Golkar Party asked (Gibran) to become a vice presidential candidate, but how about after this there is no decision. So I can't say anything yet," said the first woman who served as Chairman of the DPR RI.

As is known, the General Chairperson of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartanto announced that his party would propose Gibran's name to the Advanced Indonesia Coalition to accompany Presidential Candidate Prabowo Subianto in the 2024 presidential election. Puan said this was only a proposal.

"There has been no determination yet, only the Golkar party will nominate Mas Gibran as the vice president of the Golkar party. There is an agreement from the entire coalition of Mas Prabowo. So we'll just have to wait," he said.

Puan also emphasized that Gibran is still carrying out the mandate from PDIP. As the regional head of PDIP, the eldest son of President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) was assigned the task of campaigners (jurkam) Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD in the 2024 presidential election.

"Until now, we are still assigned, because there has been no decision from Mas Gibran. That's what I received," said Puan.

However, Puan had time to talk about relatives who were no longer together. This was conveyed when he gave a speech at the consolidation of volunteers in Surabaya yesterday.

"Regarding my speech, it does not refer to anyone. In the upcoming elections, friends may become opponents, we must anticipate this so that the solidarity and solidarity of supporting parties remains solid," he explained.

Puan added, in the politics of friends being opponents or vice versa, it is normal. He said that differences in political views are common, but the most important thing is how all parties remain united for the sake of Indonesia.

"From friends to opponents, it's normal, the important thing is that later we can unite for the sake of Indonesia to be even better in the future," concluded Puan Maharani.
