Khofifah Reminds Regional Heads In East Java To Be Ready For El Nino

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa asked all regents and mayors in his area to be ready to face El Nino and floods in November. You do this by preparing mitigation steps, checking dams, water pumps to normalizing rivers.

"We must continue to improve caution and mitigation, it must be carried out more comprehensively, in order to deal with El Nino as well as potential flooding," said Khofifah, Wednesday, September 27.

The mitigation and preventive measures are one of them by checking Dam's condition in each region. This is important because of several flood cases that occurred in East Java, due to piles of garbage in several Dams.

"So when there is a large flow of water, the water cannot flow properly. So what must be done is mutual cooperation, community service, synergy and mutual anticipation," he said.

Khofifah also asked to check the pump house whose function is very significant in water management. In fact, he has checked several times directly the condition of the pump house, both in coordination with the Provincial Government and Regency/City Government.

"The pump house should not let electricity not flow, so that when the water management process is carried out it does not function and it can have an impact on flooding," he said.

Then another important thing, continued Khofifah, is river normalization so that it can accommodate larger and optimal water discharge. Considering that many people still throw household waste in rivers, such as mattresses, sofas, and television, this is also one of the causes of river density.

"We have been informed by the Head of BNPB to immediately carry out normalization in three rivers in East Java. When we checked together the density was extraordinary, to clean it up, we couldn't manually use a long hand excavator. There were many pieces of wood that were up to 6 meters long, TV, sofas and so on," he said.

Therefore, Khofifah asked all parties, including the Regents/Mayors in East Java, to prepare mitigation, preventive and quick response steps. Mainly in dealing with El Nino as well as potential flooding, because based on the BMKG in the second or third week of November, there has been enough rain.

"I ask for help to prepare joint mitigation, because there are many rivers that may have accumulated garbage. That is our anticipation of the threat of flooding," he said.
