BMKG Urges The Public To Beware Of High Waves In The South West Java Sea To DIY

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public, especially fishermen and tourists, to be aware of high waves that have the potential to occur in the southern sea of West Java to the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

"In the east wind season like today, the wave height of 2.5-4 meters that fall into the high category often occurs in the southern sea of West Java-DIY," said Head of the BMKG Technician Group of the Tunggul Wulung Meteorological Station, Cilacap Teguh Wardoyo, quoted by Antara, Sunday.

Therefore, he said, his party again issued an early warning of high waves in the southern sea of West Java-DIY which is valid until Monday (3/7) and will be updated soon if there are further developments.

He said during the early warning, high waves were predicted to have the potential to occur in the southern waters of Sukabumi, southern waters of Cianjur, southern waters of Garut, southern waters of Tasikmalaya, southern waters of Pangandaran, southern waters of Cilacap, southern waters of Kebumen, southern waters of Purworejo, and southern waters of Yogyakarta.

In addition, he continued, high waves also have the potential in the Indian Ocean south of Sukabumi, the Indian Ocean south of Cianjur, the Indian Ocean south of Garut, the Indian Ocean south of Tasikmalaya, the Indian Ocean south of Pangandaran, the Indian Ocean south of Cilacap, the Indian Ocean south of Kebumen, the Indian Ocean south of Purworejo, and the southern Indian Ocean of Yogyakarta.

According to him, the potential for high waves was triggered by wind patterns in the southern part of Indonesia, which predominantly moved from southeast to east with speeds ranging from 8-30 knots.

"The wind movement pattern that tends to be in a direction with high speed has the potential to increase sea wave heights," he explained.

In this regard, he expects all marine service users to pay attention to the high risk of wave and wind speed to shipping safety because based on analysis, wind speeds are more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters are dangerous for fishing boats.

Furthermore, wind speeds of more than 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters are dangerous for barges, wind speeds of more than 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters are dangerous for ferries, and wind speeds of more than 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters are dangerous for large ships such as cargo ships and cruise ships.

"We ask tourists and people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur so that they remain vigilant," said Teguh.
