Debate Acronym PMI As Indonesian Migrant Worker, BP2MI: Let Other Institutions Decide Legally

JAKARTA The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) asked the Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection Agency (BP2MI) not to use the 'PMI' acronym as an abbreviation for Indonesian Migrant Workers.

"The proposal from the Indonesian Red Cross to replace the PMI (Indonesian Migrant Workers) acronym. This is their proposal. For us, BP2MI let the competent authorities resolve it", said Head of BP2MI, Benny Rhamdani, Tuesday, June 6.

According to Benny, the BP2MI reference so far has been clear, namely in accordance with Law Number 18 of 2017 concerning the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers, as well as Presidential Decree Number 90 of 2019 it is clear that it is not clear that Indonesian Migrant Workers must be abbreviated as PMI. And according to Benny, that is what BP2MI is running.

The PMI Acronym was not written in Law Number 18 of 2017, nor Presidential Decree Number 90 of 2019. Indicating that, BP2MI has so far been consistent. If there are other parties, such as journalists who use the abbreviation or term PMI in terms of explaining Indonesian Migrant Workers, it is not BP2MI's authority to prohibit them," said Benny.

This Hanura party politician explained that BP2MI's position in terms of implementing legislation remains perpendicular. BP2MI even made a number of improvements to terms, dictions, which tend to discredit Indonesian Migrant Workers. Not wanting to see foreign heroes make it difficult for anyone.

"If using the term or the word PMI, BP2MI has never used it in a single sentence. For example, we say avoiding the placement of Indonesian migrant workers or PMIs, with the addition of constrained PMIs, PMIs that are illegally dispatched by syndicates. I really don't want Indonesian migrant workers to be used as dairy cows, and be harmed or humiliated. Both in diction, narrative, verbal context, and actualization of policies in the field," said Benny.

Benny said, BP2MI respects what is the request of the Indonesian Red Cross. Where BP2MI is expected to no longer use PMI acronyms. Because in the argument, the reason for the Indonesian Red Cross, the abbreviation of PMI as regulated in the regulation is only feasible for them.

"Indonesia Red Cross proposes changes to PMI's acronym. On the basis of the proposal and request of the Indonesian Red Cross, we respect that. BP2MI is asked not to use PMI's acronym anymore.
