JAKARTA - BRICS Foreign Ministers gathered on Thursday (1/6) local time in Cape Town City, South Africa to hold a two-day meeting to discuss global and regional issues.

BRICS is a bloc of developing countries consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.

"Our discussion today will focus on opportunities to strengthen and change the global governance system, as well as explore the synergy between BRICS and the G20 in the multipolar world," South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said at the opening of the meeting.

Pandor added that their meeting would also seek solutions for a sustainable and inclusive global economic recovery, hoping to maintain a peaceful environment as well.

"For two decades, we have heard calls to reform multilateral institutions just to continue to be disappointed," Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said in his opening remarks quoted by Antara.

Jaishankar said the BRICS meeting was held at a critical time when the international situation was challenging. The meeting, he continued, had to send a strong message to the world that the old ways could no longer be used to deal with the current situation.

According to him, BRICS is a symbol of change.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, Mauro Vieira of Brazil, and Chinese Deputy Prime Minister Ma Zhaoxu were among the guest speakers at the meeting.

Several other leaders who were not yet members of the BRICS formation were also present at the meeting, including Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

South Africa will chair the BRICS summit this year on August 22-24 in Johannesburg, with the theme BRICS and Africa: Partnerships to accelerate joint growth, sustainable development, and inclusive multilateralism'.

Pandor said the BRICS vision was a partnership to prepare for global leadership in a world that was divided by competition, geopolitical tensions, inequality, and deteriorating global security.
