BMKG Asks Public To Be Alert Of Potential Rob Floods During Eid Period

JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) asked the public to be aware of the potential for tidal flooding (rob) during the 2023 Eid holiday in several coastal areas in Indonesia.

"We need to be aware of the potential for tidal flooding which has the potential to occur on April 22-25 2003 in several coastal areas in Indonesia," said BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati in a meeting with DPR Commission V as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, April 4.

She said that Indonesia's coastal areas that have the potential for tidal flooding include the coast of Banten, the north coast of Pantura, such as the north coast of DKI Jakarta, the coast of Central Java, and the coast of East Java which can disrupt community activities around the coast and the loading and unloading of goods and passengers.

The head of the BMKG said that it was also necessary to watch out for the ebb and flow at Tanjung Priok in the period April 22-24 2023 with a maximum tide value of 0.4 meters. Then in Ciwandan, Banten, with a maximum tide value of 0.3 meters on April 22-25 2023.

In addition, in Banyuwangi with a tide value of up to 0.9 meters on April 22, 2023, and in Tanjung Perak with a tide value of up to 1 meter on April 20-25 2023.

Not only on the island of Java, but Dwikorita also mentioned areas that have the potential for tidal flooding, especially on the coasts of Aceh, West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Belitung, Banten, DKI Jakarta, West Java, East Java, Central Java, Bali, NTB, NTT, West Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Sulawesi, North Sulawesi, North Maluku, Maluku, the North coast of Papua, and the coast of South Papua.

"To anticipate this, we have started coordinating especially to mitigate extreme weather, namely with BNPB, Ministry of Transportation, BRIN, and Ministry of PUPR," she said.

Dwikorita said that her party would continue to intensify outreach about the early warning in coordination with the local government, BPBD, Basarnas, and other related parties.

Meanwhile, for flights, Dwikorita said the forecast for potential convective cloud cover for flights that needs to be watched out for in April is the condition of cumulonimbus clouds in the Andaman Sea region of the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra to the south, Java Island, Natuna Sea, Java Sea, Makassar Strait, and the north coast of Papua. West to Papua and the Arafura Sea.

"We will continue to update this forecast because the conditions are very dynamic so we have to keep updating up to six hours before the incident," she said.
