BMKG Releases High Wave Potential In Southeast Sulawesi Waters, Fishermen Asked To Be Alert

KENDARI - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) released a high wave warning for the waters of Southeast Sulawesi (Sultra). The high waves reached 4 meters.

The Coordinator of Observation and Information at the BMKG Kendari Maritime Meteorological Station, Faizal Habibie, said the potential for normal waves as high as 1.25 meters to 2.0 meters could occur in the southern part of Baubau Waters.

"[Furthermore] the waters of the western and eastern Wakatobi, as well as the eastern Banda Sea in southeastern and southern Southeast Sulawesi," he said in a statement, Tuesday, February 28, which was confiscated by Antara.

Even though it is normal, BMKG asks fishermen to remain vigilant regarding the climate that often changes.

"We ask people who live on the coast of high waves to remain vigilant and careful," he said.

High waves between 1.25-2.5 meters also have the opportunity to occur in the waters of the Sulawesi region in the southern part of the Makassar Strait covering the western waters of the Selayar Islands.

Furthermore, the waters of Sabalana, the eastern waters of the Selayar Islands, the northern part of Lut Flores, the western part of the Flores Sea, and the northern waters of Bonerate Island-Kalaotoa.

Meanwhile, high waves between 2.5-4 meters are likely to occur in the waters of southern Bonerate Island-Kalaotoa, and eastern Flores Sea.

Faizal Habibie added that early warning against the weather that occurred on March 1, 2023, could potentially experience moderate and heavy rain which could be accompanied by lightning and strong winds at 06.10 WITA in Kolaka and Bombana Regencies.

"It can also spread to the Kolaka Regency, especially the Pomalaa sub-district and its surroundings," said Faizal.
