JAKARTA - The President of the Republic of Indonesia Joko Widodo (Jokowi) would like to express optimism that the construction of the capital city of the archipelago (IKN), East Kalimantan, has begun and the flag ceremony to commemorate Indonesia's independence will be carried out in the new capital city on August 17, 2024. "I just want to convey an optimism that this IKN has started its construction, both infrastructure, office, and this is the house of its minister," said President Jokowi, quoted by ANTARA, Thursday, February 23. Jokowi said that the physical work of IKN has begun with progress that continues. That way, he said, there is no need for anyone to doubt the development of the IKN. "So if there are still any doubts, the field has moved like this," he said. The construction of IKN, said Jokowi, was carried out in a long period of time. The development is likely to be carried out within 10-15 years, not only two or until five years. This, said Jokowi, is not done in countries that have also carried out the relocation of the capital city. This is not a project of 2 to 5 years.. This can be 10-15 years with the cities in other countries that move it also started and completed the same time as the period I conveyed," he said. The Head of State targets that the flag ceremony to commemorate the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia can be carried out at IKN on August 17, 2024. On that occasion, President Jokowi reviewed the construction of ministerial houses in IKN. A total of 36 ministerial houses in the region is targeted to be completed in June 2024. "Because indeed we have a target of August 17, 2024, there is a flag ceremony in the capital city of the archipelago," said President Jokowi.

The Indonesian government is building an IKN that will become Indonesia's new capital to replace Jakarta. According to the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas, IKN will carry a city with a modern concept, smart city, and environmentally friendly city. The construction of this new capital city is estimated to be completed in its entirety by 2045 with an estimated cost requirement of IDR 466 trillion.
