In The Aftermath Of The Alleged Case Of Sexual Abuse Of An Elementary School Student In East Jakarta, The DKI Provincial Government Has Been Asked To Recruit Teachers Using Psychological Tests

Chairman of the Board of Experts of the Federation of Indonesian Teachers' Unions (FSGI) Retno Listyarti assesses that there is a need for psychological testing in the recruitment process for education personnel such as teachers.

This is in the aftermath of the case of an Islamic teacher who is suspected of sexually harassing a number of elementary school students in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta.

"The recruitment of teachers anywhere throughout Indonesia is not accompanied by psychological tests that lead to sexual behavioral irregularities or sexual reformation of a teacher. This test can actually be carried out as a preventive measure," said Retno to VOI, Monday, February 13.

The former commissioner of the Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) confirmed that the cost of psychological tests on teaching staff recruitment was quite expensive. He suggested that the cost of psychological tests should not be charged to prospective teachers, especially honorary teachers.

"The cost of the test is quite expensive. If possible, it will be borne by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Budget if it is deemed necessary and important to do it," said Retno.

From this case, Retno reminded that the DKI Provincial Government needs to improve the application of methods of prevention and control of violence in educational units regulated in DKI Jakarta Governor Regulation Number 86 of 2019 and Minister of Education and Culture Regulation Number 82 of 2015.

"To create child-friendly schools, safe schools, and protect children from various forms of violence, the two closely related rules need to be implemented by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Education Office," he said.

As previously reported, an Islamic teacher with the initials A was taken to the East Jakarta Metro Police for allegedly molesting seven students at an elementary school in Duren Sawit, East Jakarta.

This case is suspected to have occurred since July 2022 and was only revealed after there were victims who dared to report. The honorary teacher has now been named a suspect and has been detained by the police.

East Jakarta Deputy Chief of Police AKBP Ahmad Fanani revealed that the Supreme Court suspect carried out his action deliberately providing homework (PR) to his students. After that, the suspect examined the PR by calling the victims one by one to sit on the lap by the suspect.

"The modus operandi of the suspect MA is to make homework for his students. After arriving in class, they are called one by one. After that the female students are lapuated and told to open their legs in a sitting position. MA also opens their legs," he said.

With the sitting position of the victims, it resulted in the suspect's lust growing and until his genitals stood up.

Suspect MA alias A was charged with Article 76 E in conjunction with Article 82 of the Republic of Indonesia Law No. 17 of 2016 concerning the stipulation of government regulations in lieu of Law no.01 of 2016 concerning the second amendment to Law No. 23 of 2002 concerning child protection and sexual abuse of children. The maximum threat of imprisonment is 20 years.
