The Mataram City Health Office, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), asked residents to be aware of their chikungu disease due to viral infections transmitted by the Aedes Albopictus mosquito in the rainy season.

"Although the case of the chikungu disease has not been found in Mataram, we must be vigilant," said Head of the Mataram City Health Service (Dinkes) Dr. H Usman Hadi as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 7.

The statement was made in response to data from the NTB Provincial Health Office which recorded the number of suspected chikungu cases until the third week of January 2023 as many as 396 cases. Meanwhile, throughout 2022 the number of suspected chikungu cases was 1,675 cases.

Usman said the symptoms of chikungu are similar to Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), namely hot body, fever, dizziness, pain in joints, and decreased platelets but not as low as dengue fever.

In this regard, he continued, to prevent chikungu and dengue fever, the community is advised to be vigilant and care about environmental cleanliness by intensifying the Mosquito Nest Eradication (PSN) movement.

"Both the chikungu and the DHF prevention are the same, namely environmental cleanliness," said Usman Hadi.

Touching on the latest case of dengue fever in Mataram City, Usman said that the number of dengue cases in Mataram on Saturday, February 4, or the fifth week of 2023 was recorded at 7 cases. That number decreased compared to the previous week of 12 cases.

"The total number of dengue cases for five weeks in 2023 was recorded at 52 cases and two cases are still being hospitalized," he said.

Usman added that his party hopes that dengue cases can continue to decline along with increasing public awareness with environmental cleanliness.

Especially if there are uncertain weather changes such as rain for a short time and heat can potentially emerge dengue and chikungu mosquito larvae.

"If it rains continuously, it is better because mosquito larvae will be carried away," said Usman Hadi.
