JAKARTA - A new fact was revealed by the Mayor of Surabaya, Eri Cahyadi, regarding the rioter who occurred a few days ago at a coffee shop in the Sukolilo area. Eri said the rioter was not a gangster but a member of a silat college.

He made this statement following the circulation of footage of a group of rioters suspected of being gangsters on social media platforms.

"Yesterday it was not a gangster, because there were no gangsters in Surabaya. Yesterday it was between two silat colleges," he said as quoted in a press release by the city government in Surabaya, East Java, Thursday, February 2.

"So this university must be calmed down, later we will meet again," he said.

He said that in pencak silat and martial arts institutions, leaders play an important role in maintaining the harmony of their members.

"So now how can the leaders provide understanding for those below. Below, if those who talk about those who have a college, they can obey," said Cak Eri.

The mayor emphasized that there were no gangsters in the city of Surabaya. The riot case involving members of the martial arts college in Sukolilo has been handled by the police.

"This is still being followed up by the Chief of Police, because yesterday this university also went through WhatsApp to (coordinate) the gathering," he said.

"Why can we know from the university? Because from the police there is evidence from the university. Our job is how to unite universities to protect the city of Surabaya," he added.

Cak Eri said that the leaders of martial arts institutions related to the case had been met and agreed to make peace.

"God willing, this college (leaders) has made a peace agreement. It's just a matter of how we now, the city government, the police, and the warrior of the college and its teachers to be more massive down to make them aware, because the number is thousands," he said.

The Surabaya City Government together with the Ashan Rembulan Team of the Civil Service Police Unit every night routinely conduct patrols to maintain regional security.

The Surabaya City Government and the Surabaya City Police, according to him, have also summoned leaders of silat and martial arts schools and asked them to help maintain the security and peace of the city through "Jogo Suroboyo".

The leaders of martial arts and pencak silat universities in the city of Surabaya have declared a commitment to jointly maintain the security and peace of the city.
