NTT - At least 40 residents of Niunbaun Village, Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province were flooded. The reason is the runoff of Kali Kaibino after heavy rains flushed the area for two days.

"There were dozens of houses of residents of Niunbaun Village who were flooded. The flood that hit the area occurred from Sunday (29 January) afternoon until Monday (30 January) afternoon," said Head of the Disaster Risk Reduction Forum (FPRB) Kupang Regency Elfrid V Sstrange in Kupang, NTT, Tuesday, January 31.

According to data from the BPBD team, Elfrid said the dozens of residents were affected by flooding with various water levels to a high of 50 centimeters.

He said a team from BPBD Kupang Regency had gone down to Niunbaun Village to help deal with victims of natural disasters.

According to him, at the time of the incident the victims had fled to a safer place because the overflow of flood water from the Kainino river continued to increase because there were no flood-resistant embankments, so the floodwater overflowed into local residents' settlements.

Floods that occurred in Niunbaun Village also submerged the Kanino State Elementary School facilities and were also flooded so that learning activities on Monday, January 30, were abolished.

"Students and teachers have cleaned the classrooms where there are a lot of mud deposits due to being flooded," said Elfrid V Sstrange.

He explained that flooding also damaged farmers' agricultural crops such as corn plants that had grown and dozens of terak belonging to residents were also swept away by the flood when the incident occurred.

"According to information from BPBD officers and the Niunbaun Village Government, the flood conditions have begun to recede even though the rain is still happening, residents should remain vigilant if heavy rains are to evacuate immediately in order to anticipate the worst things," said Elfrid.
