JAKARTA - The Ministry of PUPR will distribute additional surface water supplies to Jakarta through the Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM). The goal is to minimize people using excessive groundwater.

"What we are pushing now is that we will supply additional surface water for Jakarta," said Secretary General of the Ministry of PUPR Mohammad Zainal Fatah in Jakarta, Thursday, January 19, as reported by Antara.

Zainal Fatah said the PUPR Ministry is currently preparing two SPAMs, namely SPAM Jatiluhur and SPAM Djuanda.

It is hoped that around 10,000 liters/second the surface water supply can be distributed to Jakarta from SPAM Jatiluhur and SPAM Djuanda.

When the surface water from the SPAM - SPAM enters Jakarta, of course, groundwater extraction will be stopped. This needs to be done so that Jakarta's ground level does not continue to decline due to excessive use of groundwater.

"For surface water taken from Jatiluhur, we have West Tarum Canal or known as Kalimalang which is a water surveyor from Jatiluhur to Jakarta. Meanwhile, water taken from the Jatiluhur Dam to SPAM Jatiluhur or Djuanda will also be built a pipeline network," said Zainal Fatah.

Meanwhile, the surface water supply from SPAM Karian - Serpong to Jakarta only acts as a supply, considering that the majority of the surface water supply from the SPAM will be distributed to the Banten area.

"For the progress of the construction of SPAM Karian - Serpong, water surveyers are currently preparing a system or water carrier from the Karian reservoir to the watershed to be processed and then distributed," said Zainal Fatah.

Previously, the Ministry of PUPR started the construction of the Jatiluhur I Regional Drinking Water Supply System (SPAM).

This SPAM utilizes raw water from the Jatiluhur Dam in West Java Province which is channeled through the West Tarum Channel.

PUPR Minister Basuki Hadimuljono said the construction of the Jatiluhur I Regional SPAM was an effort by the Government to improve environmental improvement in Jakarta by reducing groundwater use to overcome land subsidence in the capital city of Jakarta.

The Jatiluhur I Regional SPAM project was initiated by the PT Jaya Construction Consortium Manggala Pratama Tbk PT Wijaya Karya (Persero) Tbk. PT Tirta Gemah Ripah with a cooperation period of 30 years. The construction has started in stages since January 2022 and is targeted for completion in June 2024.
