YOGYAKARTA - PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) plans to implement smart meters on recording customer electrical meters. This step aims to improve service quality for customers. So, what is a PLN smart meter?

President Director of PT PLN (Persero) Darmawan Prasodjo said that the implementation of Smart Meter was carried out through the development of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) service to increase the accuracy of electricity bills on recording meters in each transaction.

"AMI will complement the digitization of services on the customer side. This is done as a step to encourage digital transformation, starting from the generation, transmission, to distribution side," Darmawan said in a written statement on Sunday, December 25, 2022.

Smart Meter PLN is an electronic device that has the ability to track and record the use of connected electricity in a household. Through the use of smart meters, recording electricity consumption can be done automatically and the data will be sent directly to the company.

Darmawan said the implementation of Smart Meter had been carried out for the last two and a half years. This is part of digital-based Innovation, Transformation and Efficiency related to electricity carried out by PLN.

"So for the last 2.5 years, PLN has worked hard to implement smart meters in the context of transformation as an important pillar of Smart Grid," said Darmawan.

What is meant by Smart Grid is a digitally connected electricity network that allows customers to regulate and manage electricity needs. The smart grid pillar can be realized by implementing the use of Smart Meter.

To make this program a success, PLN has conducted joint studies, ranging from campuses, manufacturing industry, and others, before implementing smart meters on customer electrical meter recording.

"We are building cooperation with ministries, with local governments and associations," said Darmawan.

He added. The presence of Smart Grid is PLN's commitment to maintaining the reliability of network systems and electricity infrastructure amid the national economic recovery.

"This is also a concrete manifestation of the company's transformation that we are making. We made breakthroughs through Smart Grids so that we can provide better supplies to all customers," said Darmawan.

Therefore, in order to accelerate the implementation of Smart Meter, PLN together with the State Grid Corporate of China (SGCC) signed the AMI Managed Services (Sewa Beli) Procurement contract in Jakarta on Thursday 22 December.

This signing is carried out in the context of developing a smart meter based on AMI technology to provide a sophisticated and accurate electrical network system.

Darmawan hopes that with this collaboration, the development of a smart meter based on AMI can increase the accuracy of electricity bills and the results of reading meters.

"We will be more accountable, where the quality and quantity of data received through this technology will also be more guaranteed so that in the future it will be more efficient," added Darmawan Prasodjo.

President of State Grid Corporate of China, Zhang Zhigang fully supports PLN's steps in evolving into an energy transition. He agreed that in energy transformation and energy transition a digital-based network system is needed so that it is more efficient and accountable.
