The National Resilience Institution (Lemhannas) is a non-ministerial government agency tasked with assisting the president regarding education, reviewing national, regional, and international strategic issues, and strengthening national values. Currently, Lemhannas is led by Andi Widjajanto who was inaugurated as Governor on February 21, 2022. The following is information regarding the history, duties and functions of the Indonesian National Defense Institute.

Quoted by VOI from Lemhannas' official website, Thursday, December 22, 2022, the forerunner of the establishment of this institution stems from the idea of General AH Nasution, who at that time served as Deputy Minister for the First Sector of Defense/Security.

Nasution proposed the establishment of a national resilience institution which was later approved by the first Minister Ir. Djuanda.

As a follow-up, a Decree of the First Minister Number 149/MP/1962 dated December 6, 1962 was issued. The decree instructed the establishment of the Interdepartemental committee in charge of preparing the establishment of a national resilience agency.

It took two months to prepare for the formation of the institution. It was only on May 20, 1965, that the National Defense Institute was inaugurated. The inauguration of Lemhannas was carried out on National Awakening Day.

In its draft formation, Lemhannas is prepared as a center for education and assessment of strategic issues related to national defense in a broad sense, including controlling the integrity of the nation.

In 1974, the Second President of the Republic of Indonesia, Suharto made Lemhannas one of the implementing bodies of the Department of Defense which helped the Minister of Defense/Pangab in their efforts to achieve, uphold and maintain National Resilience by fostering the realization of integrity and cooperation in the direction and use of all elements of national strength and potential.

In 1982, Lemhannas resumed its reorganization, along with the ABRI reorganization separating the Minister of Defense and Security from the ABRI Commander. With this reorganization, Lemhannas' position is under the ABRI Commander.

In 1994, Lemhannas again carried out a reorganization. This time, there was a name change that was originally changed by the National Defense Institute to become a National Defense Institution. In addition, Lemhannas' residence was also changed to be under the Minister of Defense.

When Gus Dur served as President, Lemhannas was removed from the Department of Resilience and his position changed to a Non-Department Government Institution (LPND).

The Lemhannas reorganization occurred again in 2006 or during the era of the administration of Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). At that time, SBY issued Presidential Regulation (Perpes) Number 67 of 2006 which contained the president's decision to form the Lemhannas Steering Committee and provide Governor Lemhannas with a position and ministerial level treatment.

With this change, SBY hopes Lemhannas can become a world-class institution (World Class Institution).
