JAKARTA - Acting Governor of DKI Jakarta Heru Budi Hartono responded to President Joko Widodo's signal regarding the plan to build an Intermediate Treatment Facility (ITF) Sunter waste treatment facility, North Jakarta.

Although the construction of the Sunter ITF is still stalled today, Heru explained that at least the DKI Provincial Government is still building a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant in Bantargebang, Bekasi, which is a waste processing machine into fuel up to 2,000 tons per day.

"Yes, we are already in Bantargebang, there is already an RDF system. Maybe he (Jokowi) will look there," Heru said when met at the National Monument, Thursday, December 22.

Moreover, according to Heru, Jokowi not only highlighted waste in Jakarta as a problem that must be resolved, but also other provinces in Indonesia. ITF Sunter is just an example of a waste processing project highlighted by Jokowi.

"Not only Jakarta, right, all of Indonesia must also pay attention to the waste problem. Yesterday, at the event," said Heru.

Yesterday, Jokowi mentioned the Sunter ITF project, which has not been carried out since its tenure as Governor of DKI Jakarta.

"So the governor in DKI, we started the Sunter (ITF) until I didn't become governor, I haven't even signed it. Even though we have planned it, it hasn't been (completed). I don't know now whether it's (completed)," said President Jokowi at the National Working Meeting of the Environmental Fund Management Agency (BPDLH).

Jokowi also encouraged that waste affairs be resolved immediately so as not to become dirt in cities, rivers and seas. According to Jokowi, waste problems are one of the priorities that must be addressed by BPDLH considering that waste management in various regions has not been resolved.

On that occasion, Jokowi had a chance to ask directly to the governors who were present at the event regarding the progress of waste management. "There is something that has been resolved, it is not a waste matter. Is someone pointing a finger? Not yet. If someone has pointed a finger, tomorrow I will check directly in the field. Not yet. Because I know, nothing. This must be resolved immediately," he said.

For information, the idea of the Sunter ITF began in 2009 when Fauzi Bowo served as Governor of DKI. This plan was continued by Joko Widodo to Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, but there was no realization.

While in office, Anies Baswedan, who continued this project, had carried out the groundbreaking of the Sunter ITF since 2018. The laying of the first stone at that time turned out to be just ceremonial because construction was still stalled.

In its development, the construction of the Sunter ITF had planned to cooperate with a power plant company from Finland, Fortum Power Heat and Oy as an investor. However, over time, Fortum left the Sunter ITF project because it was not confirmed.

In the 2023 APBD, the DKI Provincial Government provided capital injections to PT Jakarta Propertindo amounting to IDR 517 billion to initiate the construction of the Sunter ITF. Along with that, Jakpro is exploring the Sunter ITF development agreement, which has a project value of around IDR 5.2 trillion, with potential investors.
