JAKARTA - Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim won the vote of confidence in Malaysia's Parliament on Monday, important support for his post, after last month's election failed to get a simple, unprecedented majority winner.

PM Anwar held a parliamentary meeting to prove his majority, after rivals and former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin cast doubt on his support.

"Today's government has brought a proposal to trust the Prime Minister and success in proving the validity of majority support in the People's Council," PM Anwar tweeted, citing his Twitter account, Monday, December 19.

Mosi believes it was legalized by a simple vote, with lawmakers voicing their support, after the opposition opposed it because Anwar had been formally sworn in as Prime Minister by the king.

"Yes, there is. We have sufficient majority and that is two-thirds," said Minister of Communications and Digital Fahmi Fadzil.

"The unity government in Malaysia stands strong with solid support, and we will focus on the welfare of the people," he added.

The opposition bloc continues to question the number of lawmakers in parliament with 22 seats supporting Anwar, saying they are ready to take over as ruling governments "when the time comes".

"It could be anytime, tomorrow, next week, or next election," said opposition leader Hamzah Zainuddin.

PM Anwar, who is also the finance minister, took steps to strengthen his support last week by signing a cooperation pact with smaller political parties.

The parties agreed to ensure political stability after years of chaos, spur the economy, encourage good governance, and uphold the rights of the Malay people, the majority of the country and Islam, as its official religion.

PM Anwar, who has spent more than two decades as an opposition figure, did not win a simple majority in a tough vote last month. However, he was appointed by Malaysia's King and began forming a coalition government with the help of other political blocs.
