JAKARTA - Russia began building a "shielding dome" aboard a nuclear waste reservoir at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant (PLTN), officials said on Saturday.

Europe's largest nuclear power plant and the world's top 10 has been controlled by Russia since March, shortly after Ukraine's war began.

Fear of a nuclear disaster remains amid reports of shootings around the area.

Pro-Russian official in Zaporizhia who is also chairman of the We Are Together movement, Vladimir Rogov, said efforts to build a "protector dome" aboard a nuclear waste collection site were ongoing.

"For now, it will protect against the bullet fragments and the IED (coup bombs) dropped from the drones. In the future, it will be more substantial," he wrote on Telegram, citing Antara, Sunday.

In a separate statement, Russia's state-owned nuclear operator, Rosenergoatom also announced the start of the construction of a "safety bond" to protect nuclear waste shelter sites.
