JAKARTA - Next year, the traffic control system on the Jakarta road will level up. The DKI Provincial Government will implement a Green Light project with artificial intelligence (AI) as a congestion breaking system in Jakarta.

The DKI Jakarta Transportation Agency (Dishub) is collaborating with a giant technology company, Google, in implementing the Green Light project. Starting the discussion since September 2022, the DKI Provincial Government and Google have agreed on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the Green Light project in November.

Broadly speaking, the Green Light project aims to optimize the function of traffic lights to reduce congestion, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions by utilizing Android-based AI technology.

In planning this system, Google monitors the analysis of anonymous data from the navigation system. Furthermore, Google will calculate and analyze the metric of the flow of junction traffic using machine learning and cloud technology.

Then, Google provides recommendations to the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government in determining the calculation of each traffic light at the intersection. The goal is to reduce the traffic that is stagnant by the density of vehicles.

Jakarta became the first city in Southeast Asia to take advantage of the Green Light project to help analyze the congestion conditions of the city.

Seeing the city that has implemented Green Light, Bangalore in India, for example, this project has helped the city optimize better traffic light time settings, reducing waiting times at intersections, road congestion, and carbon emissions. By 2022, traffic jams in Bangalore will be reduced by 20 percent.

In addition to unraveling congestion, it is also hoped that the use of Green Light will increase fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, improve air quality, and make driving activities safer and more enjoyable in Jakarta.
