JAKARTA - China will strengthen communications and strategic coordination with the European Union, President Xi Jinping told European Council President Charles Michel on Thursday.

In a meeting at the Great Hall of the People, Beijing, President Xi told Michel he hoped "EU agencies (EU) and member states would build objective and correct perceptions about China", state broadcaster CCTV reported.

"China will remain open to European companies, and hopes the EU can get rid of interference to provide a fair and transparent business environment for Chinese companies," President Xi told Michel.

Neither President Xi nor CCTV explained what he meant by interference.

President Xi said China and the EU must strengthen coordination of macroeconomic policies and complementary advantages, jointly creating new growth machines and ensuring the safety, stability and reliability of industrial supply chains.

Meanwhile, Michel, who is on a one-day visit to China, will also meet with Prime Minister Li Keqiang and Li Zhanshu, chairman of the permanent committee of the National People's Congress.

His visit came after European leaders expressed concern at a meeting in October about the economic dependence on China.
