CIANJUR - At least 422 educational institution building units in Cianjur Regency, West Java, suffered minor to severe damage due to an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 on Monday, November 21, 2022.

This number consists of 143 units of Early Childhood Education (PAUD) and 202 damaged learning rooms.

Elementary School (SD) levels as many as 165 school buildings and 579 rooms were damaged.

The education level for Junior High School (SMP) is 59 schools and 815 rooms are damaged.

The Center for Community Learning Activities (PKBM) as many as 29 units of buildings along with 45 rooms were damaged.

The Cianjur Regency Disdikpora Office as many as one unit along with nine units of the room were damaged. The Cianjur Sports Facilities Division as many as one unit along with three rooms were damaged.

Meanwhile, the West Java Provincial Education Office reported that until November 21, 2022, there were 26 buildings at the equivalent SMA/SMK level which were also damaged.

Akib said the damaged school buildings were spread across 18 of the total 32 sub-districts.

The number of buildings of the most affected educational institutions is in Cugenang District, reaching 42 units, Cianjur District 35 units, Warung Kondang District 17 units, Cikadu District 13 units.

While the rest are scattered in Bojong Picung, Campaka, Cibeber, Cibinong, Cidaun, Cijati, Cilaku, Cipanas, Gekbrong, Kadupandak, Karangtengah, Mande, Pacet, Pagelaran, Sukaluyu, Warungkindang and Sukaresmi sub-districts.

According to Akib, severe damage is generally experienced by school buildings domiciled in the epicenter.

"The average damaged building outside the epicenter of the earthquake is because buildings that have not been fenced for decades. In addition, there are also buildings whose composition is not balanced, such as buffers using light steel, but the tiles use heavy materials," he said.

The Cianjur Regency Government provides a policy to temporarily eliminate teaching and learning activities for students in all locations affected by the earthquake. While learning activities in areas that are declared safe, continue to run normally.
