JAKARTA - Law enforcement officials in India are often bothered by the act of mice,ANGles who on several occasions caused the 'loss' of evidence of criminal acts.

Most recently, Indian police said mice ate nearly 600kg of marijuana, when the court demanded that the confiscated marijuana be displayed as evidence during the trial, in connection with allegations of smuggling.

Police in the northern city of hala wrote a letter to the judge, saying 581 kg of marijuana had disappeared from two warehouses after being confiscated from smugglers more than five years ago.

Police arrested six people suspected of smuggling on the highway and confiscated drugs in two shipments in 2018 and 2019. The smuggler suspects are now being tried for drug trafficking and other narcotics charges.

Police sent the drug samples to court at the start of the trial but were mandated to show overall evidence, to strengthen their cases and get punished.

The court asked senior police officers to ensure the safety of evidence, which should have been submitted on Saturday.

Public Prosecutor Ranveer Singh said the drugs were eaten byANGes and could not be presented.

"There is no place at the police station where the deposits can be saved from the rats. The remaining (Ganja) from the large shipments was destroyed by officers," the prosecutor said in court, launching The National News November 24.

Prosecutors told the court that nearly 700kg of marijuana stored at several police stations in the district were under the threat of mice.

They also talked about the inability to deal withANGos, which they said filled the safest place inside the police station.

"Small in size, the rats are not afraid of the police and the police also cannot be considered experts in solving problems," explained the prosecutor.

It said courts in India could take years, if not decades, and many defendants often escaped sentences for poor police investigations or evidence management.

Prosecutors in eastern Jharkhand State told courts in 2017 that mice consumed nearly 45kg of marijuana stored in smuggling cases involving 150kg of drugs.

Meanwhile, police in Bihar State the year said mice drank about a million liters of alcohol stored in warehouses in one of the few dry states.
